Denver Girls Inc Seniors

Among other things I volunteer at Girls Inc here in Denver. If you haven’t heard of them check out the website, it’s a fantastic organization that has 100% of my support. The tag line is Strong Smart and Bold. I love that. The girls I’ve met there are absolutely awesome! They are all strong, and know what they want out of life. They’re going for their dreams with everything they’ve got. How many teenagers do you know like that?

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not easily impressed by most young people. But when I met this group of senior girls, I knew I had to do something special for them. So I decided we’d go out and do a fun photo shoot and then put it all into a book with notes from the girls themselves. Needless to say they loved the idea and we were off! First up were Isioma and Dulce. Who I have to say totally rocked it! I love that we didn’t do a ‘typical’ senior portrait session. (I have to say I’m not a fan of that, which is probably why I typically don’t do seniors) We just went out and had a TON of fun. My kinda session.

Aren’t they gorgeous ladies! I just adore all of them. And we still have another photo shoot to go! Can’t wait!

People Project, week 2

Did I say this was going to get easier? Maybe it takes longer then two weeks? It was definitely still difficult to get the guts, but I didn’t hesitate as much. So maybe I am improving? I had some interesting things come out of last weeks subjects, and nothing I had in mind or wanted for that matter. So this week I think I played a little more cautiously. Which is kinda of sad really. I don’t want to have a type of person in mind, I just want to photograph the different people that I see all over Denver.

And I kept with my one frame rule. It really did help and make me think a little more about what I’m doing, instead of just flying by the seat of my pants.

Project People, week one

Winter is always a low time for any photographer, especially a wedding and portrait photographer. So naturally there are fewer opportunities to get out and shoot, so I’ve decided I need to do a personal project that would get me outside and shooting. I wanted something that would push me and make me almost uncomfortable. Approaching complete strangers on the street is definitely something I don’t like to do, let along asking to take their picture. It literally took passing by about 4 people before I worked up the nerve to ask this first couple. But they were great, a little shocked, but obliged none the less.

So I pull the camera up and click off three frames without even really thinking about it. And he totally called me out on it! Which I’m so glad he did! He’s right, I said one picture and I took three. So challenge number two is, I get one frame. That’s it! I have to think about what I’m doing and the shot already in my head before I even pull the camera up. Which I have to say is really easy to get away from shooting digital. You don’t have to worry about how much film your using or what it’ll cost if you over shoot. You have to think before you press the shutter. Something very easy to forget.

But alas, here is week one. Three complete strangers in one frame. My hope is to blog each week on Friday and to do this as long as I feel inclined. Maybe a year? Hope you enjoy!

To shoot or not to shoot

In the slower months of winter, it can be difficult to keep motivated. It’s cold outside, who would want to go out? I have to say winter is not my favorite season, in fact it’s probably my lest favorite. But I am motivating myself in this new year to get out there and photograph something everyday. I tried this last year and did really pretty well until about April, then got to busy again. But I think it really did help keep me focused and thinking as creatively as possible.

Inspiration

As an artist I’m always looking for things that inspire me and get me excited to pick up the camera. I love looking at all kinds of art, from other photographers, to sculpture and paintings. I recently came across Rodney Smiths work, and was absolutely floored! L.O.V.E.D it! His work is so classic and clean. They’re just timeless in every sense of the word. And it’s so HARD to do anything ‘timeless’. We talked about how to make architecture timeless all the time when I was working for a firm. How and what makes something timeless? Does it need to still look fabulous in 50 or 1000 years from now before it’s ‘timeless.’ Or is it something else, that even something brand new can possess? I personally am not big on tends. Especially when it comes to my photography. I still laugh when I see my parents wedding photos. Now it could be the brown 70′s tux. But I want my clients to look at their photos 50 years from now and feel like nothing has changed. All they see is the love they have for each other and how much fun they had the day they got married. Anyway I totally got off track. I’m always on the look out for inspiration that’s ‘timeless’ in whatever that means. And Rodney Smith totally nailed it on the head in my opinion.

Inspiration is all around us, we just need to stop and smell the roses.
