Did Someone Put Crack In My Lefsa?
A Tradition:
The handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, etc., from generation to generation.
We have several traditions in our family, but none that are as heart and soul as Lefsa making.
Lefsa is what Christmas time is made of. I could be sitting on a beach a million miles away and it would feel like Christmas with Lefsa in my hand. And not the store bought kind that I laughed at in Safeway, but the homemade kind. The kind passed down from generations.
The smell of it frying up on the griddle and the soft melt in your mouth goodness when it’s still warm. As Cody said, ‘it’s crack to you people.’ And he’s right. We get so excited and can’t wait to get our hands on it.
But really it’s more then just potatoes and cream. It’s a childhood. I smell the familiar smell and instantly think of Grandma and the excitement of the Christmas season approaching.
When Cody and I chose to move a thousand miles away we gave up being with family on all the holidays and being a part of all the traditions. But this past Thanksgiving weekend with both of my brothers home we did something we haven’t done in over a decade. We made Lefsa.
All the difference and annoyances melt away and we all feel like kids again. If for only a morning.
