Project 52; Week 1

Project 52; Week 1

In 2014 I did a weekly letter to Delilah.  I wanted to tell a story of our days together, just her and I.  The project was so much more then I ever thought.  What began as an innocent way to just be more present turned out to be some of my favorite images.  I had my camera handy almost anywhere and I was always taking notes on little things that I wanted to write about later in the post.  Two years later things have changed so much!  We now have a big girl, at 3.5 she’s growing into herself in such a beautiful way. Crosby has joined the family and he adds his own magic to mundane daily life.

So I’m bringing the project back.  I’m scared I won’t have time to blog every week…but then again maybe I just need a push.  I’m worried I won’t have anything to say, which is really all in my head.  As soon as I sit down, the words flow like water.  Mostly I’m looking for excuses not to do it.  And that’s when I know, I NEED to do it.  Yes it scares me, but I also know the end results are something I’ll never forget.

So, Crosby and Delilah here we go!

Outside is a favorite place to play, especially you Crosby.  We can’t get out fast enough in the morning.  Coffee in one hand and your little chubby hand in the other we line up to go outside.  Delilah has to be line leader of course, then you, and Champ bringing up the rear hoping he doesn’t get forgotten inside.  As you’ve gotten older Crosby, I’ve noticed a more independent spirit.  Most of the time you run off into the yard on your own.  You’ll climb the slide on your own, play catch with yourself (laughing hysterically), and most of the time find ways to entertain yourself.

When Daddy comes home, the welcoming committee is practically throwing a parade, which I think is adorable.  Now that the weather is cooling a little, the west facing backyard isn’t a million degrees in the evening so it’s become the favorite place to burn off those last few bursts of energy.  Daddy, of course, is the best play thing around.  I love playing with you both, but something about stepping back and watching the action feels satisfying to me.  It almost feels like time stands still.  I soak up the squeals of laughter and panting of children out of breath from running.  I feel at peace and completely in sink with the world.  You two and your Daddy and are also my most favorite subjects to photograph.

Delilah, oh my girl.  Three has been a challenge for us.  Mostly I think for me.  I’ve struggled to find the way I want to parent you.  As you get older, it’s become increasing more challenging to know exactly what you need emotionally.  And your personality is so much more like your father then me, I mistakenly try to parent you the way I’d want to be parented.  If that even makes any sense! I want you to navigate your emotions and not hide them.  I want you to always feel safe coming to me no matter what it is, always.  You are such a sweet, kind hearted, and deep thinker.  We’ll keep trying, you and I.  Bit by bit we’ll make it through.

Remember my sweets, life is short, don’t waste your energy on worries.  It never solves anything.

xoxo – Your Mama
